VAHINES

The vahine, pronounced [vaine], is the Tahitian woman, of the Tahitian “vahine” (woman, wife, concubine, mistress) from the proto-Polynesian fafine. Testified in Europe since the end of the 18th century, the term has been considered as an icon of European imagery vis-à-vis the Polynesian myth for more than two centuries.
